Mike Bailey is a 40-year journalism veteran with experience as a reporter, copyeditor and Managing Editor for an award-winning mid-sized suburban daily. He attended Poynter Institute of Journalism Studies in St. Petersburg, Fla. and holds a BS in Journalism and an MS Ed.
He was the editor of the Elgin (Ill.) Courier News, a Copley and later, Sun Times Media Corporation publication which won many state awards, including best in class.
He has consulted for Wick Communications at newspapers in Williston, North Dakota and Pierre, South Dakota where he helped refine and redirect editorial resources and assisted in hiring managing editors, reporters and other staff members for the two newspapers. He also advised the Pierre Capital Journal on its redesign.
For 3 years he was editorial content director for BocaJump.com, a hyperlocal news site in Elgin, Ill. dedicated to local news and events. He recently edited two editions of the Leading Lawyer magazine, a publication of the Chicago Law Bulletin.
Bailey is also an award-winning columnist with numerous writing awards from the Associated Press, the United Press International, the Illinois Press Association, the Northern Illinois Newspaper Association and won 3 Peter Lisagor awards, given to outstanding journalists in the Chicagoland area. He is a contributing writer for Leading Lawyer magazine where he profiles some of Chicago’s highest-rated and most respected attorneys.
He also taught writing at Elgin Junior College for 10 years and has hired over 100 journalists in his many years with the Sun Times News Group.
